Prosecutors grill ex-lawmaker over suspicions linked to Seongnam developer
SEOUL, Oct. 25 (Yonhap) -- Kwak Sang-do, a former lawmaker of the ruling People Power Party, appeared before prosecutors Wednesday for questioning over suspicion of concealing criminal proceeds from a land developer at the center of a high-profile development corruption scandal in Seongnam, south of Seoul.
Kwak was indicted in February last year for taking 5 billion won (US$3.9 million) from the Seongnam-based developer Hwacheon Daeyu Asset Management under the pretext of severance pay and incentives for his son who worked at the firm. But he was acquitted of the bribery charges by a Seoul court in February this year.
The Seoul Central District Prosecutors Office then appealed the acquittal and has opened an investigation against Kwak on suspicion of violating the law on concealing criminal proceeds in connection with the 5 billion won from the developer.
Prosecutors reportedly grilled Kwak about suspicions surrounding his close financial relationship with his son and the nature of the 5 billion won his son received from Hwacheon Daeyu. They have reportedly found that Kwak once paid his son's graduate school tuition of about 30 million won and home rental deposit of 20 million won.
