SEOUL, June 22 (Yonhap) -- "BTS, The Best," the latest Japanese-language album released by K-pop superstars BTS, topped the Oricon weekly chart and set a record for highest album sales this year.
The seven-piece band's new album "BTS, The Best" swept the latest weekly album chart with a whopping 782,000 album sales.
On June 16, the first day of the album's release, 572,000 copies were sold, breaking Oricon's highest sales record for the weekly album rankings this year. The previous record was held by the Japanese idol group SixTones with 467,000 albums.
In addition, "BTS, The Best" has the second highest sales volume after Mariah Carey's "THE ONES" released in 1998.
BTS also broke its previous record for the highest albums sales in the first week as foreign male artists, which was achieved by its Japanese album "Map of the Soul: 7 ~The Journey~" released last year.
"It's an honor for so many people to listen to our music and we thank you all," BTS said. "We will try to become artists who try their best to comfort and cheer everyone up."
"BTS, The Best" is an album that covers all the singles and album tracks the group has released in Japan over the past four years starting from 2017. A total of 23 songs, including BTS' original Japanese songs and Japanese versions of the band's Korean songs, were featured.
