Police investigate bread factory workers' finger amputation accident
SEOUL, April 10 (Yonhap) -- Police launched an investigation after two workers had parts of their fingers severed while on duty at a confectionery factory near Seoul early Friday morning.
The accident occurred at SPC Samlip Co.'s bread factory in Siheung, some 30 kilometers southwest of Seoul, at 0:19 a.m.
In the accident that reportedly occurred during the replacement of a conveyor sensor, the middle and ring fingers of a 20-something worker's left hand and the thumb of a 30-something worker's right hand were partially severed.
The 119 emergency rescue squad transported the injured to a nearby hospital and notified the police and the labor ministry of the accident.
Police secured CCTV footage at the scene and other materials necessary for the investigation. They said factory executives can be booked on a charge of professional negligence resulting in injury if circumstances indicating negligence in accident prevention efforts are found.
In May last year, a female worker was killed at the same factory after her upper body got caught in a conveyor belt during lubrication work. The factory was also hit by a fire in February, leaving three workers injured.
