자연주의 수채화가의 마지막 인사

(서울=연합뉴스) 도광환 기자 = 수채화 작가 김철우 화백(68)은 특별한 작업방식과 화풍으로 잘 알려진 화가다. 그는 평생 '길 위에서 그리다'라는 주제로 여행을 떠나며 그림을 그렸다. 수채화구를 배낭에 넣고 국내는 물론 세계 각국을 다니며 대자연을 자신만의 애정이 어린 시선으로 담아냈다.

화실이나 작업실을 두지 않고 자연 속에서 발품 팔아 해온 작업이지만 그의 그림은 유화의 강렬함 속에 수채화의 은은함을 넣은 독특한 화풍으로 더욱 주목받아 왔다.

그런 그가 지난 3월 말기 암 선고를 받고 생애 마지막으로 여겨지는 전시를 열었다. 천생 화가인 김 화백이 가족과 친구, 제자를 한데 모아 선보이는 전시는 '길 위에서 그리다! 그리고 멈추다'전이다. ‘멈추다’에서 고별전임을 의미한다.

지난 달 서울 인사동 갤러리 H에서 열렸던 전시는 김 화백의 13번째 전시였다. 부인 이현숙 씨는 남편의 뜻을 존중해 모든 항암치료나 입원 치료를 거부했다고 전했다.

김 화백은 "장례라는 이질적이고 형식적인 추도보다는, 전시를 통해 그동안 희로애락을 함께 해 준 인연들과 잠시나마 자유롭게 만나 감사의 마음을 전하고자 한다."고 말했다. 또 그의 작품세계에 대해선 이렇게 말했다. “길이란 아스팔트도 있고, 신작로도 있죠. 그 여러 가지 길이란 결국 목표를 향해 가는 ‘헤매는' 자리입니다. 전 죽음을 앞두고 있지만, 여러 가지 길에서 사는 날까지 꾸준히 가는 거죠.”

그는 유화가 소설이라면, 수채화는 시 같은 맛을 준다고 말한다. 약 50년 전, 처음 맞닥뜨린 설악의 웅장함에 매료된 이후, 그는 그의 시가 되어줄 곳들을 직접 물색하고 다녔다. 눈으로 보고, 귀로 들은 것들을 붓질했다.

그의 말을 빗대면, 그는 모든 작품에서 시를 쓰고 있는 것이다. 곧 떠날지 모르지만, 지난 시절 끊임없지 자연과 도시를 품었듯이 작품을 통해 시를 읊으며 우리를 안고 어루만질 것이다.

Kim Cheol-woo, a 68-year-old watercolor painter, is well known for his artistic mastery and unique way of work.

The South Korean virtuoso embarked on lifelong journeys with the theme of "painting on the road." Carrying his watercolor kit in his backpack, he captured the beauty of nature with his own affectionate gaze around the world.

Without a fixed studio or workspace, Kim gained recognition for his unique style of painting, infusing the subtlety of watercolors into the intensity of oil paintings.

Unfortunately, he received a terminal cancer diagnosis in March last year, and decided to hold what would be considered his final exhibition of a lifetime. The exhibition, titled "Painting on the Road! And Stopping," signifies his farewell.

The exhibition, held at Gallery H in Seoul's Insa-dong last month, was Kim's 13th exhibition. According to his wife, Lee Hyeon-sook, he refused to take cancer treatments and hospitalization.

Kim stated, "Rather than a strange, formal reunion at my funeral, I chose to throw this exhibition to freely meet my beloved ones and deliver my gratitude for sharing the joys and sorrows of our lives."

He also spoke about his artistic world. He said, "There are many different types of road, from asphalt to dirt grounds. All these paths are ultimately 'wandering' towards one goal. Though death is imminent, I will continue steadily on these various paths until my last breath."

He likened oil paintings to novels and watercolors to poetry. Some five decades ago, he was captivated by the grandeur of Mount Seorak. Since then, he personally sought out places that would become the subjects of his poetic paintings. He painted what he saw with his own eyes and heard with his own ears.

In essence, Kim’s works are poetic expressions. Even though he might depart soon, just as he explored both nature and the cities in his past days, he will continue to embrace us and console us through his art, whispering poetry to our ears.
