SEOUL, Sep. 8 (Yonhap) -- “She is a combination of loveliness, cuteness, pureness and confidence,” said Singer-actress Im Yoon-ah (31) about her character Ra-hee, a countryside high school girl in the 80s, in an upcoming film “Miracle: Letters to the President.”

Ra-hee lightens up the film by adding her bright energy to Joon-kyeong’s (Park Jung-min) gentle and trustworthy appearance who has a sole goal to build a halt in the mountain village. She has a pure and confident soul showing a pert idea to become genius Joon-kyeong’s muse and expressing her feelings for him with honest words.

“I wanted to deliver her loveliness that I felt reading the script. Being able to play her role was a miracle,” said Im on an online interview Wednesday, little before the film’s release.

“I and Ra-hee are similar in that we are both honest about expressing feelings. But Ra-hee is more straightforward and she does not think ahead or back. I have quite a lot of thought and rather cautious. I found Ra-hee’s strong will and leadership cool.”

One of the attractions Ra-hee has is dialects. Although it was Im’s first dialect acting, she did a great job. In order to naturally speak in rough countryside girl’s dialects, she repeatedly listened to the tutor’s dialect-recordings of Bonghwa North Gyeonsang Province. She also said that she was used to the accent as her grandparents were from Yeongju City, near Bonghwa.

“There is this scene in which I give out a math problem to Joon-kyeong and every number had different accents. It was already tough memorizing the numbers, but the dialects were hard too. So, the director told me to say any numbers. Some scenes have ad-libs which I discussed with my dialect-tutor,” said the actress.

She also said that the lovely romance work went well with her partner actor Park Jung-min. Saying that this was her first romance with a peer actor, she described Joon-kyeong as a smart and trustworthy character. Im thanked Park saying, “If Ra-hee pulled and lifted Joon-kyeong, Park led actor Im in the shooting set.”

Im who started acting with series “Two Outs in the Ninth Inning” in 2007 and took the first lead role in “Exit” (2019) which won her Best New Actress, has quite settled as an actress as well. Rather than evaluated with her idol-background, she shows her presence in every production with her own cute and lovely attitudes.

“I debuted as a singer and an actress almost at the same time but has worked as a singer more. I wanted to gain more experience as an actress, so I have been trying various characters for the last few years. I am still learning a lot, step by step.”

She has usually taken active female characters including "Exit"'s Eui-joo and this time Ra-hee. Im said that she had her own standard of choosing productions and building a character.

"My criteria is whether I can show a new side of me. In case of Ra-hee, I have never seen such pure and lovely character. I learned a lot from her."
