SEOUL, Aug. 27 (Yonhap) -- Two independent films, "Good Person" and "Show Me the Ghost," which won awards at Busan International Film Festival and Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival respectively, will both be released on Sept. 9.
While "Good Person" delivers a calm yet suspense drama, "Show Me the Ghost" is a comic horror film that joyfully unravels the painful and dry reality. Although the two works are similar in terms of trying to unveil the truth, the genre and storyline are developed in completely different ways.
Director Jung Wook's debut feature film "Good Person" follows the conflicting feelings between high school teacher Kyung-seok (Kim Tae-hun) and student Se-ik, who is suspected by Kyung-seok for stealing a wallet in class and his daughter's car accident.
As the title suggests, the film constantly throws the question of what it is to be a good person. Kyung-seok seems like a good person, but his character slowly collapses as he faces a complicated and awkward situation. Kyeong-seok's trust in his students turns into doubt as he is stuck in agony and his attempt to avoid a responsibility in a defensive manner becomes another problem of his.
"Good Person" won both the CGV Arthouse Award and the DGK-MEGABOX Award at the 25th Busan International Film Festival for its well-organized story development which drives the characters to confusion until the truth is revealed.
If "Good Person" focuses on reflecting the inner emotions in humans during the process of chasing the truth, "Show Me the Ghost" is climaxed in the moment of finding out the truth. "Show Me the Ghost," the latest work of director Kim Eun-kyoung who has also consistently made horror films in the past, is filled with the energy of three young characters.
The comedy horror follows the story of two best friends Yeji (Han Seung-yeon) and Ho-du (Kim Hyun-mok) who have been seeking jobs and a house to rent. When the two friends finally find a house, Ho-du realizes the house is haunted. Since Yeji and Ho-du don't have any money to move somewhere else, the two try self-exorcism with the help of a exorcist (Hong Seung-bum).
The tumultuous drama Yeji and Ho-du experience in order to drive out the ghosts delivers humorous aspects to the audience.
However, the movie is not all lighthearted. The reality of youths in this era such as suffering from employment and housing difficulties, is permeated here and there, and the overall message the film tries to deliver is substantial.
"Show Me the Ghost" received the Korean Fantastic Award within the Features category and the Nonghyup Distribution Award at the 25th Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival.
