살면서 한 번쯤은 크루즈

처음 본 미드가 초등 때 즐겨 본 사랑의 유람선이었다.
그리고 막연히 언제가 크루즈를 타고 세계일주를 하는 내 모습을 그려보았었다.
퇴직 후 여러 선사의 다양한 코스를 크루즈로 여행하며 크루즈 중독자가 되어버렸다.
주변분들의 요청으로 크루즈여행의 장점을 공유드린다.

젤 중요한 첫째로, 크루즈는 육로여행에 국한된 여행지를 항구도시까지 확장한다는 점이다. 세계 3대 미항 등 항구도시들은 내륙의 도시들이 갖지 못한 특별한 아름다움이 있다.
특히 이번 노르웨이 크루즈는 깊은 피요르드 속까지 거대한 배를 타고 들어갔기에 더욱 크루즈의 가치가 빛났다.
둘째, 크루즈 내 각종 엔터테인먼트 프로그램은 여행을 더욱 풍성하게 만들어준다. 아침 스트레칭, 오후 댄스교실 등도 참여하는 재미가 쏠쏠하다. 실내외 대형 풀이 4곳, 오션뷰 헬스장은 기본, 자쿠지, 사우나도 빼놓을 수 없는 즐길거리이다.
20여 명의 가수와 댄서가 펼치는 브로드웨이 스타일 공연과 마술, 아크로바틱, 서커스 등 볼거리가 매일 밤을 기다리게 만든다.
셋째, 제한된 시간의 여행자들이 더 많은 시간을 볼거리, 즐길거리에 쓸 수 있게 해준다.

크루즈 타기 전 10일 동안 북유럽 5개 도시를 하루 항공기 이동, 하루 시티투어 방식으로 여행했다. 비행 시간 1시간 거리의 인접 도시라도 공항 이동 및 대기시간을 감안하면 여행 기간의 절반을 이동에 쓴 셈인데, 크루즈는 밤에 이동, 아침이면 새 항구에 도착해 있다.
넷째, 여행자를 제일 피곤하게 하는 짐 문제를 해결해준다. 패키지를 가더라도 도시 이동 때 마다 큰 가방을 풀었다 쌌다를 여러 번 반복해야하는 수고만 덜어도 여행은 훨씬 즐거워진다.
그 외에도 삼시세끼 정찬 식당에서 서빙 받으며 다양한 요리와 와인과 디저트를 즐길 수 있는 즐거움과 환대도 빼놓을 수 없다.
영어로 음식 주문 등이 부담스럽다면 거의 20시간 열려 있는 뷔페식당을 이용하더라도 음식 수준은 전혀 다르지 않다.

멋치게 차려 입고 라이브 음악을 들으며 오션뷰를 만끽한 시간들은 소중한 추억으로 남는다.
막연히 크루즈가 너무 비싸서 아예 생각조차 안 하는 사람들이 많다. 나도 그 중 한 명이었다. 여행사들의 크루즈 상품을 살펴보니 이해할만 했다.
내가 이용한 크루즈 상품은 대개 1주일짜리들이었는데 여행사들은 항공권 포함 5~6백만원에 기항지여행 불포함 조건으로 팔고 있다. 실제 크루즈 요금은 발코니 객실 기준 1/3 정도이고 내측 선실은 1백만원 이하도 많다.
크루즈사들의 한국대리점을 통하면 전세계 비슷한 가격으로 이용할 수 있다. 항공권을 직접 끊고 승선지를 찾아가는 수고 정도는 물론 비용을 아끼기 위해서라면 감수해야 한다.
나는 항공기 요금이 부담스러워 한번 갈 때 크루즈와 인근 도시 여행을 엮어서 한다.
크루즈 중독자는 오늘도 핫딜을 얻기 위해 지구 이 곳 저 곳의 크루즈 루트들을 기웃기웃한다. 궁극의 목표는 120일 짜리 세계일주 프로그램이다. 저축부터 해야겠지만...

A Cruise, At Least Once in a Lifetime

The first American TV show I ever watched was The Love Boat during my elementary school years. From then on, I vaguely imagined myself taking a cruise around the world someday.
After retirement, I traveled various cruise routes offered by different companies and became completely hooked on cruising.
At the request of friends, I'm sharing the advantages of cruise travel.
The most important point is that cruises expand your travel experience beyond just land-based destinations to include beautiful port cities. These cities, like the world's three most beautiful ports, offer a unique charm that inland cities simply can't match.
For instance, on my recent Norwegian cruise, we sailed deep into the fjords on a massive ship, a trip that truly highlighted the value of cruising.
Secondly, the onboard entertainment makes the journey even more enjoyable. Whether it's morning stretches or afternoon dance classes, there’s something fun for everyone. With four large pools, ocean-view gyms, jacuzzis, and saunas, there's always something to do.
Every night, you're treated to Broadway-style shows performed by 20 singers and dancers, along with magic acts, acrobatics, and circus performances that leave you eagerly anticipating the evening.
Third, cruises allow travelers to spend more time enjoying the sights and experiences, without wasting time on transportation.
Before boarding the cruise, I spent 10 days touring five cities in Northern Europe by air. Even though the flight time between cities was only about an hour, the airport transfers and waiting times meant half my trip was spent just getting from place to place. In contrast, the cruise traveled at night, and by morning, we would arrive at a new port, ready to explore.
Fourth, cruises solve the biggest hassle for travelers: luggage. Even with a package tour, the constant packing and unpacking with each city transfer can take a toll. Eliminating this chore makes the journey much more enjoyable.
On top of that, you can't overlook the joy of being served three full meals a day in a fine dining setting, complete with wine and desserts. If ordering in English feels intimidating, you can always head to the buffet, which is open nearly 20 hours a day and offers equally great food.
Dressing up, listening to live music, and enjoying the ocean views have left me with cherished memories.
Many people avoid cruises because they assume they’re prohibitively expensive. I used to think the same. After checking travel agency cruise packages, I understood why.
The cruises I typically take are one-week trips, but agencies often sell them with flights included for around 5 to 6 million won, excluding port excursions. In reality, the cruise fare itself is about a third of that price for a balcony room, and there are plenty of inside cabins available for under a million won.
You can book directly through the cruise lines' Korean representatives and get similar prices worldwide. Of course, if you're looking to save, you'll have to take on the task of booking your own flights and making your way to the port of departure.
To offset the cost of airfare, I tend to combine my cruise with trips to nearby cities.
As a cruise addict, I’m constantly on the lookout for hot deals, checking out cruise routes all around the world. My ultimate goal is to take a 120-day world cruise. I’ll have to start saving, though...
