SEOUL, Apr. 12 (Yonhap) -- Korean actors took home the 2022 Canadian Screen Awards (CSA) for best lead actor and actress in the comedy sector.
The two main leads Paul Sun-hyung Lee and Jean Yoon, who plays “Appa” and “Umma,” respectively in the CBC sitcom “Kim’s Convenience,” were awarded, according to the awards website (www.academy.ca) and CBC broadcast, Tuesday.
The two received the comedy lead actor and lead actress awards in the awards ceremony which was held on April 10 (local time).
Lee played the role “Appa” in the play that first appeared on stage in 2011 and won the Best Actor in a comedy series at the 2017 CSA. The actor also gave a lecture “Landing the role of a lifetime: yourself” on the global platform TED in November last year.
Yoon was a playwright and an actress in the 1980s but ended her career once after facing racism. The actress made a comeback with the role “Umma” after the recommendation of playwright Ins Choi and received the Award of Excellence at the ACTRA Awards in 2020.
“Kim’s Convenience” began with its first season on Oct. 4, 2016, and ended with the fifth season on April 2021. The series depicts a funny and honest story of a Korean immigrant Kim family who moves to Toronto in the 1980s and runs a convenience store.
The series received 11 nominations from the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television for the 2017 Canadian Screen Awards and gained worldwide popularity after being aired on Netflix last year.
