SEOUL, Jan. 18 (Yonhap) - Hwangdo Bunggi Pungeoje (Fishing Ritual of Hwangdo Island), a representative local fishing ritual, is to be held for two days from Monday during Lunar New Year holiday in Hwangdo-ri, Anmyeon-eup.
Hwangdo Bungi Pungeoje originated from the fact that fishermen who went out to the sea long ago lost their course due to fog and drifted to Hwangdo safely after following the light of Dangsan, where the current shrine is located, and built a shrine to worship on the second and third days of the first lunar month.
It was designated as South Chungcheong Provice Intangible Cultural Property No. 12 in 1991.
On Monday, the first day, they will hold a "Pigisa" where cows are caught to be sacrificed, "Saekyung Gut" to pray for a good catch of fish and the well-being of the village at the owner's house, and run with a bungi (five-colored flag).
On Tuesday, following "Bongut," "Jiseok Competition" will be held to distribute meat prepared in advance by the owner of the ship, and "Baegosa," where the owner holds a prayer service for a good catch.
For the past two years, it was held after being reduced due to COVID-19.
Hwangdo Bungi Pungeoje Preservation Society is to provide a variety of programs for tourists to enjoy together, including kite flying, along with the traditional Poongi Festival.
“Hwangdo Bungi Pungeoje is South Chungcheong Province's representative Poongi Festival, which many tourists and photographers visit from all over the country every year," said a county official, adding, "I hope many people visit Hwangdo Island at the beginning of the New Year and pray for full happiness this year."
