SEOUL, Nov. 15 (Yonhap) -- K-pop diva IU, Jungkook of BTS, and band DAY6 were selected as winners in the main category at 'MMA2024' (Melon Music Awards 2024), a major K-pop music award ceremony.
Music platform Melon, operated by Kakao Entertainment, released the list of 'Top 10' artists on Friday. The list was determined by combining digital chart performance (80%) with fan votes (20%) among 30 nominees, with voting open from October 31 to November 14.
For solo artists, both IU and Jungkook made the list, with Jungkook recognized despite his ongoing military service. DAY6, recognized for their role in popularizing Korean band music, also secured a spot.
Boy groups SEVENTEEN, RIIZE, and TOZ were selected, while girl groups (G)I-DLE, aespa, and NewJeans also made the list. The five-member virtual idol group PLAVE was included as well.
Awards for the 'Top 10' artists, who led this year's trends at the top of the Melon charts, will be presented at the main MMA 2024 ceremony.
Melon also announced the start of voting for major awards, including Artist of the Year, Album of the Year, and genre-specific categories like Best Solo and Best Group. Fan voting will account for 20% of the final decision.
Nominees for Artist of the Year include (G)I-DLE, IU, aespa, and DAY6. Album of the Year contenders include (G)I-DLE’s 2, Jungkook’s GOLDEN, and aespa’s Armageddon, among 10 selected albums.
The MMA 2024 will take place on November 30 at Inspire Arena in Incheon’s Yeongjong Island, and the ceremony will be streamed live on the Melon app, website, and YouTube channel.
