SEOUL, Apr. 15 (Yonhap) -- Due to the spread of COVID-19, mask became a daily necessity. When going out, mask should not be missed, while leaving out wallet or cellphone.
Compared to masks people wear for disease prevention these days, the mask worn to hide the entire face is quite different from daily sanitary mask. Many artists have left considerable pieces of artwork, examining mask.
The National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art holds the exhibition 'Masquerade,' which displays about 40 pieces of home and abroad artwork related to mask, until July 31th in Gwacheon branch.
The exhibition, which opened on the 13th, display masks including LEE Hyungkoo's 'Altering Facial Feature with H-WR,' a photo of LEE wearing unique glass helmet, LEE Dongi's 'Atomaus' which LEE created by combining the Japanese animation character Atom and the Disney character Mickey Mouse, and KIM Jungwook's 'Untitled' which expresses a face of a person trying to shed its skin.
A master of sculpture, KWON Jinkyu's 'Mask,' Kira Kim's wood art 'Super Heroes_Monster Mask,' and Zach BLAS's installation 'Facial Weaponization Suite' are also displayed.
The exhibition is designed for viewers to enjoy the artworks naturally by utilizing the characteristic of Circular Gallery, instead of intentionally dividing the spaces.
An official from the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art said, "Masks have significant meaning in contemporary visual environment," adding, "Through this exhibition, it is possible to compare the mask image interpreted by modern art and the meaning and function of mask in daily life."
