Korean government thanks Rep. Strickland for wearing hanbok at an Inauguration ceremony

SEOUL, April 12 (Yonhap) -- The Korean government has been awarding letters of appreciation to those who have spread the beauty of Hanbok, a traditional Korean dress, to the international community in various ways.

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Hanbok Advancement Center will hold a ceremony to award the Letter of Appreciation for the Love of Hanbok at Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) in Seoul on the 12th as one of the "2021 Spring Hanbok Culture Week" events.

Six people who have contributed to appreciating the value as well as promoting the beauty of hanbok to the world will receive a Letter of Appreciation from the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

Marilyn Strickland, a South Korean-born American congresswoman who is one of the candidates to receive a letter of appreciation, attended the Inauguration of President Joe Biden in January, while singer Jun Hyo-seong and fashion company, LAKAI KOREA, were acknowledged for advertising the beauty of hanbok at Times Square in New York to mark the 102nd anniversary of S.Korea's Independence Movement Day.

In addition, graffiti author Shim Chan-yang who incorporates women wearing hanbok as well as hangul (official Korean alphabet) in his art work, costume directors Kwon Yoo-jin, Chae Gyeonghwa of the popular Netflix drama "Kingdom", Riot Games--a game company that held an online hanbok exhibition, and the Gangjin Jakcheon Middle School who established hanbok school uniforms for the first time will all receive the letter of appreciation.

The CEO of LAKAI KOREA, Shin Jeong-hyun, singer Jun Hyo-seong, and costume director Kwon Yoo-jin will attend the award ceremony while Rep. Strickland will give her speech through a video.

Oh Young-woo, the 1st Vice minister of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, said, "Starting from March, The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has set the last Wednesday of every month as a day to wear hanbok and is working hard to incorporate our traditional clothing in our daily lives."
