SEOUL, Jan. 5 (Yonhap) -- Jung Hae-ri, the screenwriter for MBC TV’s popular series “The Red Sleeve,” said she decided to participate in the drama after the director told her that they would portray the story of a court lady.

Jung was asked to join the series less than 100 days after her childbirth. “I admired the era of King Yeongjo and King Jeongjo. I thought it would be unfortunate to leave out that time. It was impressive that director Jung Ji-in said few dramas were dealing with court ladies after the ‘Jewel in the Palace’ in 2003,” explained the writer.

“The Red Sleeve” started with a 5% rating in the first episode and ended with more than a 17% viewership rating.

The writer thanked the actors and said they contributed greatly to the series’ popularity.

“I was truly happy to watch the perfect performances of Lee Jun-ho (Yi San) and Lee Se-young’s (Deok-im). The series was able to appeal to all ages thanks to Lee Deok-hwa, who played King Yeongjo.

“Deok-im and her friends tried to embody the characters in the original novel, and the motivation behind Yeongjo and Yi San was King Lear from Shakespeare and his third daughter Cordelia.”

Jung explained she used real historical figures Hong Guk-young and Queen Jung-soon to portray Deok-ro and Lady Kim.

Jung, who continued to write different historical dramas said, “I hope that ‘The Red Sleeve’ can be a drama following great works such as ‘Jewel in the Palace’ and ‘The Legendary Doctor Hur Jun,’” adding, “We paid homages to the series with the lines ‘It’s delicious’ and ‘Get in line.’”

“I would be very happy if the future screenwriters refer to the lines of ‘The Red Sleeve,” said the writer.
