SEOUL, July 21 (Yonhap) -- While ENA healing drama “Extraordinary Attorney Woo” is sweeping over the world, genre dramas with heavy mood such as MBC “Doctor Lawyer” and JTBC “Insider” are showing poor performances.

“Doctor Lawyer” and “Insider” have ranked 8th and 9th respectively in the drama category, according to Contents Power Index (CPI) for the first week of July, 2022 (July 4 ~ July 10), released by CJ ENM on Thursday ,

CPI index for “Doctor Lawyer” and “Insider” are 201.8 and 200.0 respectively, which are less than half of that of “Extraordinary Attorney Woo.” There was also a big difference between the first and second place, tvN's “Alchemy of Souls” (227.6).

“Doctor Lawyer” and “Insider” both tell a story of a male protagonist who struggles against the power of corruption.

Han Yi-han (So Ji-sub) from “Doctor Lawyer” confronts minister-nominee Gu Jin-gi (Kyeong yeong Lee), and Kim Yo-han (Kang Ha-neul) from “Insider” confronts corrupted prosecutor Yoon Byung-wook (Heo Sung-tae).

Both works are evaluated to have faithfully followed the genre's duty. Good and bad are clearly contrasted while the tension between the two is drawn with a sense of urgency.

Although top actors So Ji-sub and Kang Ha-neul each play lead roles, public's attention is more foucsed on fantasy films with a light atmosphere rather than provocative suspense films.

Gong Hee-jeong, a drama critic, said, "Genre dramas show the dark reality of society very clearly," adding, "While heros who fight against evils give satisfaction, nowadays viewers prefer to see a hopeful fantasy world."

She also said, “There is a tendency to want to be consoled watching hopeful world as reality becomes tougher.”

First and Second places, “Extraordinary Attorney Woo” and “Alchemy of Souls,” both cheerfully depict a world that is disconnected from reality.

Rookie lawyer who has autism spectrum disorder shows off her loveliness in “Extraordinary Attorney Woo” while two protagonists who use magic tricks bring laughs in “Alchemy of Souls.”

Kim Seong-soo, a popular culture critic, said “Why human dramas like ”Extraordinary Attorney Woo“ attract viewers show how many viewers are thirsty for hope,” adding, “Genre dramas that show true reality is emotionally exhausting.”

“For now, movies like ‘The Roundup’ that depicts unbeatable main protagonist or works like ‘Extraordinary Attorney Woo’ that mix fantasy to smooth out the reality will attract viewers,” he predicted.

☞ Contents Power Index or CPI is an indicator on viewers' behavior based on direct searches, news subscriptions, and social media buzz. The index calculates programs with various genres such as dramas, entertainment, music, and infotainment from 29 different channels. Through the Response About Content On the Internet (RACOI), data, including number of video views, posts, and comments, are collected weekly and converted into standard scores based on 200 points to calculate the average.
