SEOUL April 24 (Yonhap) -- The action film "The Roundup : Punishment ," starring Ma Dong-seok, hinted at a successful run as it surpassed a reservation rate of 90% on its opening day, the 24th.

According to the integrated ticketing network for movie theaters, as of 8 a.m. on that day, "The Roundup : Punishment " had an overwhelming reservation rate of 95.5%, securing the top spot.

The number of reservations reached over 834,000. According to the distributor, this exceeds both the reservation rate (87.3%) and the number of reservations (over 640,000) for the previous installment, "The Roundup : No Way Out," which became a box office hit last year.

In terms of opening day reservations, "The Roundup : Punishment " surpassed the record held by director Kim Yong-hwa's "Along with the Gods: The Two Worlds" (2018, with over 646,000 reservations), making it the highest for a Korean film.

"The Roundup : Punishment " has been leading in reservations since the 11th of this month, two weeks before its release.

Even during the daytime on a weekday like today, there are not many empty seats in theaters showing "The Roundup : Punishment ," indicating a strong demand for tickets.

The synergy of ticket discounts on "Culture Days" also adds to the excitement surrounding ticket reservations.

The breakeven point for "The Roundup : Punishment " is approximately 3.5 million viewers. Observers speculate that if the current momentum continues, surpassing the breakeven point and achieving the status of a box office hit with over 10 million viewers seems achievable.

In "The Roundup : Punishment ," actor Ma Dong-seok not only stars but also leads the planning, screenplay, and production of the fourth installment in the "Crime City" series. The story revolves around the powerful detective Ma Seok-do (played by Ma Dong-seok) dismantling an online illegal gambling organization.

Kim Moo-yeol portrays the powerful and malicious villain Baek Chang-gi, adding to the tension of the story as he confronts Ma Seok-do. While there has been criticism of repeating the formula of the previous series, the film has been well-received for its tight storytelling and action sequences.

The "The Roundup" series, starting with "The Outlaws" in 2017 (with 6.88 million viewers), followed by "The Roundup" (2022, with over 12.69 million viewers) and "The Roundup : No Way Out" (2023, with over 10.68 million viewers), has consistently proven its box office success.

Director Heo Myeong-haeng, who directed the first three installments of the series, also directed "The Roundup : Punishment ."
