SEOUL, Dec. 13 (Yonhap) -- While Mnet’s hip-hop contest program, “Show Me the Money” has recently finished its 10th season, its songs are still in popularity dominating the music charts’ top ranks.
The major songs for the show topped Genie Weekly Chart for 36 days from Nov. 6, which was about a month since the show began, to Dec. 11, according to Genie Music Monday.
The Weekly Chart ranks songs based on their number of streaming and download during the last 12 hours starting from 12 p.m. the day before.
Three of the contest’s songs, “Limousine” (BE'O), “BREATHE” (Anandelight) and “MERRY-GO-ROUND” (Sokodomo), landed on 1st place. Especially “Limousine” which was released through its third episode has stayed on top rank for 17 consecutive weeks on Genie Weekly Chart.
Compared to its last season, season 10’s popularity is more explicit.
After 1 month after season 9’s contest began, 4 songs ranked 1st place on Genie Weekly Chart and they stayed there for 24 days in total.
But during season 10, the songs stayed on top everyday for a month, in other words for 30 consecutive days.
Also, according to an analysis of how many “Show Me the Money 10” songs were included in top 10 on Weekly Chart for a month, 6 songs in average were there which is 2 times for than that of season 9.
Like hip-hop genre songs do, the program seems to be popular particularly amongst young men.
While there were more women listeners (54.6%) than men listeners (45.4%) of the Monthly Chart’s top 10 songs in October, the percentage of men who listened to the “Show Me the Money 10”’s songs in November was 51.9%, according to Genie Music’s analysis of streaming by ages.
Also, when divided by ages, 31.0 % of the listeners were men in their 20s which is 6.6%p higher than that of women in the same age group.
Men in their 20s accounted for 33.0% in streaming “Limousine” and for “BREATHE” men and women in their 20s each accounted for 31.4% and 22.0%.
“Men in their 20s have turned out to having been playing the lead role of its popularity. As talented producers have taken part in this season and the previous winner Basick re-appeared in the program, it seems the hip-hop fans showed great interest,” explained an official from Genie Music.
