SEOUL, Oct. 19 (Yonhap) -- A streak of feat from “Squid Game” to “Hometown Cha Cha Cha” and “My Name” ranking in world TOP 10 Netflix TV programs indicates K-drama’s continuous world-class popularity.

“Squid Game” has been securing its world top place for 27 days and tvN Weekends-drama “Hometown Cha Cha Cha” starring Shin Min-ah·Kim Sun-ho has been ranking 7~9th places for 15 consecutive days, according to global online contents service ranking site “Flix Petrol” Tuesday.

Also, Netflix new original series “My Name” released on the 15th and starring Han So-hee landed 6th the day after and has ranked 4th for two consecutive days.

Experts explains such phenomena as a riffle effect from “Squid Game”’s global sensation. They have also predicted more attention to K-productions through new global OTT (over-the-top) platforms such as Disney Plus.

“Netflix move based on customized algorithms. When a watcher chooses and watches ‘Squid Game,’ the individual will receive more recommendations for currently aired or newly released K-contents. This is how our contents are gaining attention,” explained pop culture critic Jeong Deok-hyun.

However, “Squid Game” cannot solely answer the other productions’ successes.

Some say that super band BTS and films such as “Parasite” and “Minari” have initiated the world’s attention on K-contents.

Plus, screenwriter Kim Eun-hee’s “Kingdom” which popularized “K-zombie” and Korean creature-production “Sweet Home” have played a big role in expanding the Korean works’ stage and audiences to a global scale.

Of course, we must also say that each production itself became a basis for today’s global popularity.

“Hometwon Cha Cha Cha” has well-mixed the main characters’ romance and the villagers heart-warming stories with North Gyeonsang Province, Pohang City’s beautiful scenery. “My Name” follows the familiar action genre clichés but yet has set a female main character to add freshness to its overall story.

Experts are foreseeing K-dramas, although are recognized in a single platform, Netflix, will move onto attracting more popularity in a wider area.

“As pop culture contents tend to follow trends, interest in K-dramas will heat up for a certain period. If our upcoming productions can meet the global watchers’ needs, K-contents can eventually become a genre,” said drama critic Gong Hee-jung.

“Korean dramas seem Western style from the outside but carry Korean style sentiments in the inside such as optimistic reflects of a community. If they can act as a bridge connecting the West and Asia, our contents may be able to dominate the world,” pop culture critic Kim Sung-soo.
