SEOUL, Jan. 6 (Yonhap) -- With the film and broadcast industry boycotting the Golden Globes 2022, the crew and cast members of the Netflix Korea Original drama “Squid Game” will not attend the awards ceremony.
Lee Jung-jae, a nominee for Best Performance by an Actor in a TV Series-Drama, will not attend the Golden Globes to be held on Jan. 9, at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in California, according to Artist Company, Thursday.
“Considering factors such as the quarantine period and other ceremony schedules, it seems difficult for the actor to attend the Global Globes,” a spokesman from the entertainment said.
Director Hwang Dong-hyuk and Oh Yeung-su, a nominee for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role on TV, will also skip this year’s Golden Globes.
"Squid Game" has been nominated in three categories for the first time as a South Korean TV show at the 79th annual Golden Globe Awards, including Best TV Series-Drama, Best Performance by an Actor in a TV Series-Drama, and Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role on TV.
The absence of the “Squid Game” crew at the Golden Globes seems to be attributed to public backlash against HFPA (Hollywood Foreign Press Association) which organizes the Golden Globes.
The Golden Globe Award, one of the top two film awards in the United States along with the Academy Award, is recently facing criticism in the movie industry due to allegations of corruption and controversy over racial and gender discrimination.
More than 100 firms decided to not attend the awards ceremony while famous film studios joined the boycott.
Netflix did not explicitly announce its boycott of the Golden Globes, but the production company did not send shows including “Squid Game” to this year’s ceremony. Films do not have to be submitted to be nominated.
Meanwhile, HFPA decided to hold the awards ceremony with no audience due to the impact of COVID-19 and NBC announced to not air the annual show.
