SEOUL April 9 (Yonhap) -- A total of eight Korean films have made their way into various competition categories at this year's Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival (BIFFF), one of the world's top three genre film festivals.
According to the Korean Cultural Center in Brussels, the 42nd edition of BIFFF, which opened on the 9th and runs until the 21st, features entries from Korea including "Exhuma" directed by Jang Jae-hyun, which surpassed 10 million viewers in Korea, and "The Sin" by director Han Dong-seok, recently released in Korea.
Director Kim Jae-hoon's "Devils" and Park Hee-gon's "Don't Buy the Seller" are competing in the thriller competition section, while Kim Sung-sik's "Dr. Cheon and the Lost Talisman" and Yoo Jae-sun's "Sleep" are nominated in the rookie director section.
"4PM," directed by Song Jung-woo, based on the novel by Belgian author Amélie Nothomb, competes in the experimental film section, while Jung Jae-hee's "Home" is in the international short film section.
Additionally, four films including "Alienoid: Return to the Future" directed by Choi Dong-hoon, "Concrete Utopia," directed by Eom Tae-hwa, "The Moon," directed by Kim Yong-hwa, and "Noryang : Deadly Sea," directed by Kim Han-min, will be introduced for the first time in Belgium as part of the non-competition official screening.
Directors Han Dong-seok and Song Jung-woo have been officially invited by the organizers to attend the festival for stage greetings and audience interactions. Actors Oh Dal-su, Jang Young-nam, Kim Hong-pa, and Kong Ja-kyung, who star in "4PM," will also be present.
The winners of each category will be announced and awarded on the 19th.
With an annual audience of over 60,000 participants, BIFFF is recognized as one of the world's top three genre film festivals alongside Sitges in Spain and Fantasporto in Portugal.
To date, four Korean films, including Bong Joon-ho's "The Host," have won the festival's top award, the "Golden Raven." In 2017, director Park Chan-wook received the festival's honorary award, the "Knight of the Raven."
Since 2013, the Korean Cultural Center has been supporting Korean film screenings and director invitations during the BIFFF period through a memorandum of understanding with the organizers.
