ToKyo, May 21 -- Kentaro Miura, a Japanese author of the popular manga "Berserk," died of acute aortic dissection on the 6th of this month at the age of 54, its publisher Hakusensha said on the 20th.
He was best-known for his popular dark fantasy creation Berserk, which debuted as a series in 1989.
In a statement, its publisher Hakusensha said, "All us editors sincerely pray for his repose, expressing our deepest respect and appreciation for his work."
According to Kyodo News Agency, Kentaro debuted as a writer in 1985 and began serializing the cartoon "Berserk" in 1989 in "Animal House," the predecessor of the comic magazine "Young Animal."
"Berserk," which has detailed descriptions against the backdrop of a stage reminiscent of medieval Europe, has drawn attention from South Korea and other countries around the world and has been produced as an animation.
Its cumulative circulation worldwide has exceeded 50 million copies. However, as the author died during the series, it remained unfinished.
