S. Korea reports 2nd African swine fever case of this year

SEOUL, Jan. 23 (Yonhap) -- The government on Friday confirmed the second case of African swine fever (ASF) for this year, prompting authorities to cull thousands of pigs.

The latest case was confirmed at a pig farm in Anseong, about 65 kilometers south of Seoul, less than a week after an outbreak was detected in Gangwon Province last Saturday, according to officials.

The authorities culled a total of 2,600 pigs at the farm as a preventive measure and issued a 48-hour standstill order in Anseong and neighboring cities and counties, including Pyeongtaek and Yongin.

Prime Minister Kim Min-seok ordered emergency containment measures, including restricting access to the site and culling operations, after receiving a report on the new case.

Kim also stressed the need for a thorough epidemiological investigation to determine the cause of the outbreak.

ASF is deadly to pigs, though it does not affect humans. There is currently no vaccine or cure for the disease.
