Seoul overpass-demolition
Demolition of collapsed Seoul overpass completed
SEOUL, May 29 (Yonhap) -- An overpass in Seoul that partially collapsed earlier this week has been completely demolished Friday, the Seoul city government said, with the Gyeongui Line railway service that had been suspended due to the accident set to resume over the weekend.
On Tuesday, a section of the Seosomun Overpass undergoing demolition collapsed during an on-site safety inspection, killing three people and injuring three others.
"The emergency demolition work conducted on the upper structure of the Seosomun Overpass from midnight has been completed as of 9:40 p.m.," the city government said, some 79 hours after the collapse occurred.
The city government resumed demolition work after the labor ministry approved its plan to resume demolition of the structure Thursday evening.
State railway authorities plan to work overnight to resume operation of the Gyeongui Line railway service, with plans to complete the work by 5 a.m. Saturday and resume the railway service with the first train in the morning.
Built in 1966, the Seosomun Overpass had been undergoing demolition since August last year over safety concerns and was expected to be torn down by next month.
