Trump says U.S. will 'keep,' 'run' Strait of Hormuz, should be 'reimbursed' for it

WASHINGTON, July 13 (Yonhap) -- U.S. President Donald Trump said Monday that the United States will "keep" and "run" the vital Strait of Hormuz, and should be reimbursed for controlling it.

Trump made the remarks in an interview with Fox News, Reuters reported, as disruptions to shipping in the strait, a crucial shipping route for oil, natural gas and other commodities, continued amid the Middle East conflict.

"We're going to keep the strait, and we'll probably run it," he said.

"We'll become the guardian of the strait. Maybe we'll call it the guardian angel of the strait. And we should be reimbursed for that."

Iran has continued to exert control over the strait, while the Trump administration has stressed the importance of restoring free and safe passage through the waterway, calling it "an international waterway."
