S. Korean missionary arrested in Russia

SEOUL, Feb. 3 (Yonhap) -- A South Korean missionary was detained in Russia recently, according to officials and local media Tuesday, marking another case involving the detention of a Korean national engaged in religious activities in Russia.

According to sources in the Korean community in Russia and local media reports, the female missionary, surnamed Park, was arrested and detained by local authorities late last month while working in Khabarovsk. The religious facility she operated was reportedly shut down.

South Korea's embassy in Russia and its consulate general in Vladivostok said they are checking Park's condition, the circumstances of her detention and other details.

According to an official at the Seoul foreign ministry, a consul was dispatched to Khabarovsk after learning of the case and held a meeting with Park earlier in the day to confirm her health condition.

The official added that South Korean authorities have requested humane treatment, a prompt and fair investigation, and regular consular access for Park, while providing assistance to her family in South Korea.

In January 2024, another South Korean missionary was arrested in Vladivostok on charges of espionage and remains in Russian custody without being offered a trial.
