Lee expresses hope to expand AI, energy cooperation with Singapore
By Kim Eun-jung
SINGAPORE, March 1 (Yonhap) -- President Lee Jae Myung said Sunday he will seek ways to broaden cooperation with Singapore in promising new areas, such as artificial intelligence (AI), renewable energy and defense, to advance "future-oriented" cooperation.
Lee made the remarks during a meeting with Korean residents in Singapore on the first day of his three-day state visit ahead of his summit talks with Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong. The meeting, slated for Monday, will mark their second in four months after the two countries upgraded bilateral ties to a strategic partnership during their first talks in South Korea.
"Korea and Singapore can be ideal partners based on their shared experience of overcoming scarce natural resources with human capital," Lee said, asking for the Korean community's support in opening a new chapter in bilateral ties.
Lee said South Korea and Singapore forged a strategic partnership to mark the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties last year, creating momentum to further deepen relations over the next 50 years through future-oriented cooperation.
"Going forward, the two sides agreed to further strengthen cooperation in trade and investment, and broaden the scope to future strategic sectors, such as AI, energy, green transition and the defense industry," Lee said.
"The two countries also plan to promote exchanges in tourism, education, culture and the arts to further reinforce their global partnership," he added.
On Monday, Lee is also scheduled to meet with Singaporean President Tharman Shanmugaratnam, the ceremonial head of state, and attend AI Connect, a business forum involving business leaders and entrepreneurs from both countries in the AI field.
