SIHEUNG, South Korea, Feb. 3 (Yonhap) -- The main blaze of a fire that broke out at a factory owned by confectionery company SPC Samlip was contained, authorities said Tuesday, nearly four hours after the initial outbreak.

The plant in Siheung, some 30 kilometers southwest of Seoul, caught fire at 2:59 p.m., prompting authorities to deploy some 50 pieces of equipment and around 130 personnel to put out the blaze.

The fire started at a bread production line where 12 people were at work, according to officials.

Of them, ten people voluntarily fled for safety, and two others were rescued from the fourth floor and the roof, respectively. Three sustained minor injuries from smoke inhalation, officials said.

Firefighting authorities ordered a Level 1 response, which calls for mobilizing up to 50 pieces of equipment from three to seven fire stations, and eventually contained the main flames at 6:55 p.m.

The four-story building, which included a basement floor, had accommodated a total of 544 people at the time of the fire. All of the workers were accounted for.

Police and firefighting authorities plan to conduct a joint inspection Wednesday to look into the exact cause of the fire, based on witness accounts of hearing an explosive sound at the site.
