Special counsel pursues arrest warrant for ex-military commander over alleged martial law ties
SEOUL, July 11 (Yonhap) -- A special counsel team on Saturday sought an arrest warrant for a former military commander for his alleged role in ex-President Yoon Suk Yeol's failed martial law bid.
Per legal sources, the special counsel team led by Kwon Chang-young filed for an arrest warrant for Kang Ho-pil, former head of the Army Ground Operations Command. The warrant hearing is scheduled for Monday at the Seoul Central District Court.
Kang is accused of being involved in forming a situation room inside his command and ordering the assembly of a crisis response team and all senior officers of the command.
Kang is also suspected of participating in discussions for martial law prior to Yoon's declaration.
Kang has maintained that he had no prior knowledge of Yoon's plans and he was not involved in the former president's declaration.
Three other former military commanders with alleged ties to the martial law declaration have been on trial: Kwak Jong-keun, former commander of the Army Special Warfare Command; Lee Jin-woo, former head of the Capital Defense Command; and Yeo In-hyung, former head of the Defense Counterintelligence Command.
