S. Korea reports 2 new bird flu cases; total rises to 55
SEOUL, March 10 (Yonhap) -- South Korea has confirmed new cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza at two poultry farms, bringing the total number of cases this season to 55, officials said Tuesday.
One of the new cases was reported at a quail farm in Asan, about 80 kilometers south of Seoul, and the other at a chicken farm in Gimje, some 170 km south of the capital, according to the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasure Headquarters.
Authorities said they are currently controlling access to the farms, culling the affected birds and investigating the cases.
A 24-hour standstill order has also been issued for neighboring areas of the farms, they added.
The government has ordered a special inspection of over 200 poultry farms nationwide by March 20 to prevent further spread amid the seasonal migration of birds toward the end of winter.
