Marine Corps stages large-scale amphibious landing exercise

SEOUL, Nov. 21 (Yonhap) -- The Marine Corps said Tuesday it has staged major amphibious assault drills, mobilizing thousands of troops, landing ships and helicopters, amid efforts to hone readiness against North Korean military threats.

Some 3,400 Marines and over 30 amphibious assault vehicles are taking part in the six-day drills that began Friday in Pohang, 262 kilometers southeast of Seoul, according to the Marine Corps.

On Tuesday, the troops held the "decisive action" phase of the exercise, which proceeded with amphibious assault drills in a coastal area with landing ships, transport aircraft and helicopters as naval warships and attack helicopters provided cover.

The Marine Corps said more than 10 naval ships took part in the exercise, including the ROKS Chungmugong Yi Sun-sin destroyer, to enhance joint operational capabilities.

The drills took place in connection with the South Korean military's annual Hoguk defense drills, which kicked off on Oct. 16 and is set to end Wednesday.
