Navy chief to visit Hawaii for talks with top U.S. admirals
SEOUL, July 30 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's chief naval officer will visit Hawaii this week to hold talks with top U.S. admirals to strengthen bilateral security cooperation, his office said Tuesday.
During the six-day trip through Sunday, Adm. Yang Yong-mo, chief of the Navy, will meet with Adm. Samuel Paparo, commander of the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, and Adm. Stephen Kohler, commander of the U.S. Pacific Fleet, according to the Navy.
A series of talks were aimed at discussing ways to improve the allies' defense posture, it said.
Yang will also meet and encourage South Korean troops taking part in a major U.S.-hosted multinational naval exercise in waters around Hawaii.
South Korea has dispatched some 840 personnel and multiple warships, including the 7,600-ton ROKS Yulgok Yi I Aegis-equipped destroyer, for the Rim of the Pacific Exercise that began late last month and will run through Aug. 2.
