Military chief calls for regional security cooperation against N.K. threats in forum
SEOUL, Feb. 5 (Yonhap) -- Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) Chairman Adm. Kim Myung-soo attended a security forum on Wednesday and highlighted the importance of global cooperation to deter and respond to security threats from North Korea, the JCS said.
Kim made the remarks during the eighth Indo-Pacific Security Forum, organized by the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command and attended by senior military officials from 26 countries, including Australia and Japan, according to the JCS.
In the gathering held via teleconference, Kim called for broader security cooperation to maintain a rules-based international order.
"As North Korea's threats -- ranging from the deployment of troops to Russia to the evolving WMD technology -- are emerging as global threats that go beyond the Korean Peninsula, security cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region should be expanded to sustain a rules-based international order," Kim was quoted as saying. WMD stands for weapons of mass destruction.
The participants also reviewed the outcome of a regional chief of defense (CHOD) meeting held last year and discussed possible agenda for an upcoming CHOD meeting set for August in Thailand, the JCS said.
