Parliament passes bill designating Labor Day as nat'l holiday

SEOUL, March 31 (Yonhap) -- The National Assembly on Tuesday passed a bill designating Labor Day as an official public holiday, which would allow all workers, including public servants, to take the day off beginning this year.

The parliament approved a revision to the Act on Public Holidays to make May 1 a national holiday, with the change to take effect after Cabinet approval.

Until now, only private-sector workers had been guaranteed a paid day off on Labor Day, while public servants, teachers and others in special employment arrangements, such as parcel delivery workers, were excluded from the benefit.

National Assembly Speaker Woo Won-shik said the designation of Labor Day as a national holiday would be a "significant step" toward addressing gaps affecting public-sector workers.
