Tokyo, May 6 (Yonhap) -- Nintendo, Japan's leading game company, made the highest profits in history over the past year thanks to the special effects of the novel coronavirus infection (Covid-19).

Nintendo said on the 6th that it posted a net profit of 480.3 billion yen (about 4.94 trillion won), up 85.7 percent from the previous year based on consolidated settlement of accounts for the 2020 fiscal year (April 2020 to March 2021).

This is the largest net profit ever, far exceeding the previous record of 279 billion yen for fiscal year 2008.

The company explained that the increase in sales related to the game console 'Nintendo Switch' led to strong earnings by refraining from going out due to the spread of Covid-19.

'Animal Crossing: New Horizons', a new game for Switch released in March last year, reached 32.6 million units in cumulative sales.
