Senior U.S. diplomat cites Korea Zinc's multibillion-dollar investment
SEOUL, Feb. 20 (Yonhap) -- U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau on Friday highlighted a South Korean company's investment in the United States as a key example of investment pledges made under the Donald Trump administration.
In a post on the social media platform X, Landau pointed to Korea Zinc Co., the world's largest refined zinc smelter, and its multibillion-dollar project in Tennessee.
"Here's a great example: Korea Zinc is investing $6.6 BILLION in a new metals refinery in Clarksville, Tennessee, that will include a nearly 7-million-square-foot integrated smelter, processing 1.1 million tons of ore into zinc each year using advanced technology," he said.
The diplomat added that the project is expected to create 420 new jobs in Clarksville and provide a significant boost to local construction companies and suppliers.
"Win-win economic diplomacy!" he said.
Korea Zinc plans to build the nonferrous metal smelter in Clarksville and begin producing 11 critical minerals starting in 2029.
