SEOUL, Aug. 27 (Yonhap) -- National Assembly Speaker Cho Jeong-sik on Thursday asked China to play a "constructive role" in promoting peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula, saying the two countries should work together toward that goal.

Cho made the remarks as he met with Chinese Ambassador to South Korea Dai Bing at the National Assembly, expressing hope that the two countries will continue to develop their friendly relations following the 34th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties earlier this week.

"The South Korean government is currently making efforts to create conditions for dialogue with North Korea while pursuing peaceful coexistence and shared prosperity between South and North Korea," Cho told Dai.

"Peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula are an important task that South Korea and China should work together to address," he said. "We look forward to China playing a constructive role in easing tensions on the Korean Peninsula and resuming dialogue."

Cho highlighted the importance of parliamentary exchanges in advancing the bilateral relations, saying he hopes to meet China's top legislator, Zhao Leji, in the near future.

During the meeting, Dai expressed hope that the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit, to be held in Shenzhen, China, in November, could provide an opportunity for the leaders of the countries to meet again.

The envoy stressed that China remains committed to safeguarding peace and stability and continuing to play a constructive role on the Korean Peninsula.
