Top U.S. envoy on N. Korea, Sung Kim, to join Hyundai Motor as adviser

SEOUL, Dec. 8 (Yonhap) -- Hyundai Motor Co., South Korea's largest automaker, said Friday it will appoint Sung Kim, the top U.S. envoy on North Korea, who is widely expected to retire later this month, as an adviser for the company's global business.

Kim will join Hyundai Motor in January after retiring from the U.S. State Department in the coming weeks, according to Hyundai Motor.

Kim, who recently completed his ambassadorship to Indonesia, will advise the company in areas of overseas market strategy, global trade and policy response strategy, the company said in a statement.

Hyundai Motor hopes for Kim to contribute to exploring new market opportunities and responding to the restructuring of global supply chains amid market uncertainties stemming from factors, such as market segmentation and geopolitics.

Kim joined the U.S. foreign service in 1988 and served as the U.S. ambassador to South Korea from 2011 to 2014 and as ambassador to the Philippines from 2016 to 2020.

He also served as the U.S. assistant secretary of state for East Asian and Pacific affairs and U.S. special representative for North Korea.
