Police to crack down on election law violations ahead of general elections

SEOUL, Dec. 11 (Yonhap) -- Police will crack down on election law violations starting Tuesday, as the registration for prospective candidates for April's general elections kicks off this week, officials said Monday.

The National Office of Investigation said it will set up a task force to reinforce intelligence gathering of illegal activities connected to the election, and cooperate with local election watchdogs and the Supreme Prosecutors Office to clamp down on election law violations.

It will specifically target bribe-taking, spreading disinformation, election violence, illegally mobilizing groups for electioneering and public officials engaging in election campaigns, which could gravely violate the impartiality of the elections.

It also plans to monitor social media to prevent fake news from influencing public opinion in the vote, and firmly deal with cyber terror crimes, including hacking or distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks on the National Election Commission or party websites.
