S. Korea begins deployment of command post vehicles

SEOUL, Dec. 12 (Yonhap) -- South Korea has begun deploying an advanced command post vehicle to the Army, the state arms procurement agency said Tuesday, amid efforts to introduce high-tech equipment to improve the military's operational capabilities.

The deployment of the wheeled vehicles began this month at the 25th Infantry Division in Yangju, about 30 kilometers north of Seoul, according to the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA).

The military plans to deploy some 600 vehicles in total by 2029 to Army and Marine Corps units that have so far operated command post tents out on the field. Such command posts take time to set up and are prone to enemy attacks.

The armored vehicle is able to defend against enemy fire and chemical, biological, radiological threats and is equipped with the latest communications systems, allowing for combat command on the move, according to DAPA.

It said the command post vehicle is based on the existing homegrown K808 wheeled armored vehicle, keeping maintenance costs relatively low.

The deployment comes as part of the Army TIGER 4.0 project, which aims to equip soldiers with advanced weapons systems.
