Removal of memorial stone for forced Korean labor victims begins

Masato Ishida, head of a Japanese civic group protecting a memorial stone for Korean victims of Japan's wartime forced labor, stages a protest in front of the Gunma Prefectural Office in the Japanese city of Maebashi on Jan. 29, 2024, as the local authorities began work to remove the stone at the Gunma Prefectural Forest Park in the Japanese city of Takasaki the previous day. The memorial stone was erected at the park in 2004 by the Japanese civic group to promote the public's understanding of the shared history from Japan's 1910-45 colonial rule of the Korean Peninsula and the friendship between the two neighbors.
