Memorial for student activist

People take part in a memorial at Yonsei University in Seoul on June 9, 2026, to mark the 39th anniversary of the death of late student activist Lee Han-yeol. Lee fell into a coma after being hit by a tear gas canister hurled by riot police during a pro-democracy street protest in Seoul in 1987. He died about a month later, triggering a series of violent anti-government street demonstrations across the country that forced the government to introduce a direct presidential election system.
