Defense chiefs of S. Korea, India discuss arms cooperation

SEOUL, May 20 (Yonhap) -- Defense Minister Ahn Gyu-back on Wednesday met with India's Defense Minister Rajnath Singh and discussed ways to expand bilateral defense cooperation, the defense ministry said.

The two sides agreed to accelerate bilateral defense cooperation on the basis of a strategic partnership that the leaders of both countries agreed on during their summit talks in New Delhi last month.

It marked the first visit to Seoul by an Indian defense minister in seven years.

At the meeting, the defense chiefs highly assessed Seoul's exports of homegrown K9 self-propelled howitzers to India and agreed to continue arms cooperation in the future.

The two ministers also shared an understanding on the need to set up a regular consultative group to foster systematic cooperation in the defense sector.

The meeting came as Ahn invited the Indian defense chief on the occasion of the ASEAN Defense Ministers' Meeting (ADMM)-Plus in Kuala Lumpur last year, according to the ministry.
