S. Korea seeks int'l support for UNESCO heritage committee session in Busan

SEOUL, June 23 (Yonhap) -- The foreign ministry said Tuesday it briefed diplomats from member states of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee on Seoul's preparations to host the committee's session in the southeastern port city of Busan next month and called for their support.

The 48th session of the World Heritage Committee will be held in Busan, some 330 kilometers southeast of Seoul, from July 19-29, marking the first time South Korea has hosted the meeting since joining the World Heritage Convention in 1988.

The gathering is expected to bring together some 3,000 participants from its 196 member states, as well as international organizations and non-governmental entities. The committee discusses and decides on matters related to the inscription, conservation and management of World Heritage sites.

During Tuesday's briefing, the ministry explained the government's push to adopt the "Busan Declaration" focused on international cooperation and called for support from committee member states.

Diplomats attending the event, including ambassadors from Peru, the Czech Republic, Kenya and Mongolia, praised South Korea's preparations and pledged active cooperation for the successful hosting of the session, the ministry said.
