Unification minister proposes EU-led initiative to resume inter-Korean dialogue

SEOUL, May 28 (Yonhap) -- Unification Minister Chung Dong-young on Thursday proposed an initiative led by the European Union (EU) to help the two Koreas resume dialogue and cross-border exchanges that have remained frozen for years.

In a meeting with a visiting European Parliament delegation in Seoul, Chung expressed hope for the establishment of a "2+1 multilateral dialogue framework" led by the EU and participated by the two Koreas.

"I also hope a visit to Pyongyang by a European Parliament delegation can be pursued in the near future," Chung added. The visiting delegation was led by Cesar Luena of Spain and comprised 11 lawmakers from five political parties.

Chung said Seoul's Lee Jae Myung administration opposes an absorption-style unification model seen in the case of Germany, calling it "neither possible nor desirable."

While explaining the Lee government's peaceful coexistence policy toward North Korea, Chung said the government will "gradually, step-by-step, and peacefully pursue the integration of the national community."
