S. Korea aims to host Interpol's drug response center

SEOUL, June 24 (Yonhap) -- South Korea will try to host a drug response center of the International Criminal Police Organization or Interpol in an effort to help tackle transnational crimes involving drugs, the office for government policy coordination said Wednesday.

The government aims to launch the center around the time when a general assembly of Interpol takes place in Seoul in 2029.

"The need is being raised for an international control tower in order to strategically block the 'golden triangle' region that produces 70 percent of drugs worldwide," the office said in a release after a meeting of the committee on anti-drug measures presided over by Government Policy Coordination Minister Yoon Chang-yul.

The golden triangle refers to a region bordering Thailand, Myanmar and Laos.

The National Police Agency will push for a letter of intent with Interpol at December's Interpol general assembly.
