Ruling, opposition lawmakers visit flood-hit regions to assist recovery efforts
SEOUL, July 21 (Yonhap) -- Lawmakers of the ruling Democratic Party (DP) and main opposition People Power Party (PPP) visited flood-devastated regions in the South Chungcheong and Gyeonggi provinces on Monday to help with recovery efforts following record torrential rainfall.
Around 50 DP lawmakers, including the party leadership, as well as candidates for the upcoming party leadership race -- Reps. Jung Chung-rai and Park Chan-dae -- visited Yesan, a district in South Chungcheong hit by the heaviest downpour in two decades last week.
"We have already requested (the government and the presidential office) to designate the area as a special disaster zone for swift recovery," DP floor leader Kim Byung-kee said, as he joined lawmakers in removing waterlogged watermelons from a greenhouse.
He also pledged the party will do its utmost to support the swift restoration of damaged facilities.
The PPP leadership, including the party's interim leader Song Eon-seog, visited Gapyeong, 55 kilometers northeast of Seoul, to inspect recovery efforts. The PPP said it will travel to Yesan on Tuesday.
Heavy rains and landslides ravaged the country last week, killing at least 18 people, including two in Gapyeong.
