SEOUL, Aug. 27 (Yonhap) -- The South Korean won gained against the U.S. dollar Thursday, as the Bank of Korea (BOK) raised its key rate in a second consecutive increase.
The won was quoted at 1,380.9 won per dollar at 3:30 p.m., up 3.9 won from the close of the previous stock trading session.
The won stood at 1,388 won per dollar at the start of share trading earlier in the day and rose to as high as 1,377.5 won at one point.
After the BOK raised the benchmark rate by a quarter percentage point to 3 percent and signaled a somewhat dovish stance on further monetary tightening, the won pared some of its gains.
BOK Gov. Shin Hyun-song also said there is a room for the won to further strengthen against the dollar through preemptive actions on monetary policy.
Foreigners purchased a net 142.2 billion won (US$102 million) worth of local stocks during the latest trading session, with the benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index rising 1.53 percent to close at 6,912.37.
