SEOUL, March 23 (Yonhap) -- President Lee Jae Myung on Monday underscored the importance of self-reliant defense capabilities, citing a "very complex and fluid" international situation, as the U.S.-Israeli war against Iran has disrupted global energy markets.

"I believe self-reliant defense capability is essential to our integrated security posture," Lee said during a regular security meeting with senior officials, according to Cheong Wa Dae. "We must be able to defend ourselves without relying on outside assistance, and we do have such capabilities."

The security meeting came as the U.S.-Israeli conflict with Iran enters its fourth week, with U.S. President Donald Trump giving Iran an ultimatum to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial waterway for around a fifth of the world's supply of oil and gas.

"The international situation is very complex and fluid. In times like this, a national-level integrated defense system is important." he said. "We must respond not only to military threats, but also to nonmilitary challenges such as cyberattacks, terrorism, climate change and disasters."

Lee also highlighted South Korea's advanced conventional military strength and defense industry, noting that its defense spending amounts to about 1.4 times North Korea's gross domestic product.

"Given these strengths, we should take pride in our capabilities and continue to reinforce our systems and preparedness so that we can protect ourselves under any circumstances," he said.

During the meeting, the Joint Chiefs of Staff briefed on the integrated defense posture, while the National Intelligence Service outlined its assessment of North Korea's situation for this year.

Participants also discussed response measures in the event of casualties and property damage caused by large-scale explosions at gas and oil refinery facilities, presidential spokesperson Kang Yu-jung said in a written briefing.
