(LEAD) S. Korea, Canada to hold '2+2' talks of foreign, defense chiefs next week
(ATTN: ADDS details throughout)
SEOUL, Feb. 20 (Yonhap) -- South Korea and Canada will hold their "two plus two" talks of their foreign and defense ministers in Ottawa next week to discuss ways to improve their bilateral ties, Seoul's foreign ministry said Friday.
Foreign Minister Cho Hyun and Defense Minister Ahn Gyu-back will hold talks with their counterparts, Anita Anand and David McGuinty, on Wednesday, according to the ministry.
Their talks will be followed by the signing of a joint military and defense intelligence-sharing pact and a press conference.
The foreign and defense ministers will hold separate bilateral talks with their respective counterparts on the margins of next week's talks.
South Korea and Canada last held their two plus two talks among top foreign and defense officials in Ottawa in November 2024.
The 2+2 talks come as South Korea seeks to win a major Canadian submarine procurement project, valued at around 60 trillion won (US$41 billion), to supply up to 12 3,000-ton class naval submarines to Ottawa. The deadline for the proposal is set for early March.
