Lee, outgoing PM hold what could be last weekly meeting before Kim leaves office

SEOUL, June 29 (Yonhap) -- President Lee Jae Myung met with outgoing Prime Minister Kim Min-seok over lunch Monday in what could be their last weekly discussion session, as Kim is expected to leave office soon to run for leader of the ruling Democratic Party (DP).

During the meeting, the two discussed the results of Kim's recent trip to China that included talks with Chinese Premier Li Qiang and his attendance at a World Economic Forum (WEF) meeting, also known as the Summer Davos Forum, in the coastal city of Dalian, Kim's office said in a release.

The release also summarized a total of 23 weekly meetings that the two have had so far to discuss key pending issues, such as the hosting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum and the handling of the negative effects on the economy from the Middle East conflict.

"The government will actively take advantage of the state affairs consultation channel of weekly meetings to swiftly discuss outstanding issues and determine the direction of response for the presidential office and the Cabinet to run state affairs as one team unwaveringly," the office said.

Kim has offered to step down about a year after he took office as Lee's first prime minister.

Lee has nominated Han Seong-sook, minister for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and startups, to succeed Kim as prime minister, and the National Assembly held a two-day confirmation hearing on Han's nomination last week.

Her nomination is expected to be approved by the Assembly as the ruling party holds a majority.
