Cheong Wa Dae vows efforts for S. Korean vessels' transit through Strait of Hormuz after Iran war truce

By Chae Yun-hwan

SEOUL, April 8 (Yonhap) -- Cheong Wa Dae on Wednesday pledged to make utmost efforts to ensure South Korean ships can safely pass through the Strait of Hormuz, based on conditions under a two-week ceasefire plan agreed between the United States and Iran.

U.S. President Donald Trump earlier said he agreed to suspend strikes on Iran for two weeks, subject to Tehran agreeing to the "complete" and "immediate" reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital oil shipping lane.

Following Trump's announcement, Tehran said safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz would be possible for two weeks through coordination with Iran's Armed Forces and with due consideration of "technical limitations."

"The government will do its best to ensure our vessels can pass through the Strait of Hormuz as soon as possible," a Cheong Wa Dae official said, when asked about when South Korean ships could go through the strait.

The official noted it is determining the exact method and conditions for the passage through communication with relevant countries, noting the limitations outlined by the Iranian side.

South Korea heavily relies on the Middle East for its oil and gas imports, with more than 60 percent of its crude oil delivered through the Strait of Hormuz.
